SUMMARY:WfBench: Automated Generation of Scientific Workflow Benchmarks
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\n\nWfBench: Automated Generation of Scientific Workfl
ow Benchmarks\n\nColeman, Casanova, Maheshwari, Pottier, Wilkinson...\n\nT
he prevalence of scientific workflows with high computational demands call
s for their execution on various distributed computing platforms, includin
g large-scale leadership-class HPC clusters. To handle deployment, monitor
ing, and optimization of workflow executions, many workflow systems have b
een developed over the past decade, creating a need for workflow benchmark
s to evaluate the performance of these WMSs on current and future software
stacks and hardware platforms.\n\nWe present a generator of realistic wor
kflow benchmark specifications that can be translated into benchmark code
and executed with current workflow systems. Our approach generates workflo
w tasks with arbitrary performance characteristics (CPU, memory, and I/O u
sage) and with realistic task dependency structures based on those seen in
production workflows. Our experimental results show that our approach gen
erates benchmarks representative of production workflows and conducts a ca
se study to demonstrate the use/usefulness of our generated benchmarks to
evaluate the performance of workflow systems under different configuration
  scenarios.\n\nSession Format: Recorded\n\nTag: Applications, Architecture
